Does baby sign language delay speech?

.
Baby Sign Language is a growing phenomenon around Australia after the inception of using sign language with babies began in America.

Using baby sign language can help ease frustration for parents and babies during those preverbal times offering a simple form of communication
to help enable babies to get them selves understood.

But does using baby sign language actually delay speech?

The short answer to this is no.

Signing is a very good start to communicating as a babies physical development does not allow them to start speaking properly until around 18 months old.

Communication is communication and using forms of sign and gestures are all very effective ways for a child to get their message across and get others to understand them.

By using Auslan, the official sign language of Australia, as your form of baby sign language communication, you are enabling your baby to be able to communicate with a potentially wider range of people and/or carers. Many people working in the childcare industry have had some form of basic training in sign language so using Auslan can be of great benefit for consistency rather than having to try and work out what made up signs or gestures may mean.

Part of the problem when parents get concerned that their baby is not speaking yet is because they think that their baby should be speaking by now. But that is rarely the case. There are common milestones in your baby's language development but these have to be considered as guidelines only since each baby is unique.

There is a huge variance in the rate of vocabulary development and while many babies will start to babble or attempt their first words soon after their first birthday some will babble endlessly while others may skip it completely and begin speaking in short sentences. Whether a baby starts to speak late or early rarely gives any true indication of that baby's future capabilities.

Research carried out in America and published in the Journal of Non Verbal Behavior by Dr Linda Acredolo showed that when using baby sign language and talking to your baby at the same time on average the children in their studies at 36 months of age were speaking at an equivalent level of non signing 47 month olds.

It is important to encourage your baby's attempts at speech by talking to them when using baby sign language so that they can connect the spoken word with the sign.

Start slowly and focus on 4-5 keywords to begin with. Encourage attempts to say words and repeat the words back to your baby. Listen to what they have to say and speak slowly back to them while giving them time to respond just as you would with an adult conversation.

If you have trouble understanding your baby but they are proficient in signing don't stop speaking to them simply because it is easier to use signs to work out what they want. If you don't take the time to speak with them they may become used to simply getting what they want by signing and not worry about trying to speak. While this wont affect them in the long run it is much better to continue with using speech and sign together.

Go With The Flow-Surviving The First Year Of Motherhood

.

The First Year of Motherhood is a happy and joyous time filled with exciting events you will always remember. It can also however, be a stressful time filled with life altering events. Having a new baby inevitably changes your life. If you don't learn to go with the flow you may very well start to question your sanity!

A person who is very organized and schedule oriented will often become overwhelmed by the life changes that take place after the birth of their new baby. Gone are the days of perfect routines and smoothly running schedules. The first year of motherhood is instead replaced by random feedings and diaper. This is when you suddenly have to stop, breathe and learn to go with the flow. It is the time to realize that things will get done when they get done. If your baby is a fussy sleeper through the night, and your starting to greatly resemble the walking dead, stop, slow down and take a nap when your baby takes a nap-even if its 2:00 in the afternoon.

Children will always require care, but during your first year of motherhood you will devote almost all of your time to constantly caring for them. If you don't learn to roll with the punches, you will surely loose your mind! Do not let yourself fret over that stack of dishes in the sink because your baby is fussy and wants to be held. Those dishes aren't going anywhere and will be there when you get to them. The easiest way to go with the flow is to learn to maximize your time. Just do a little bit here and there whenever you have the chance. Do not overwhelm yourself with trying to get everything done at once. Break your chores into small tasks. This will give you a sense of accomplishment each time you complete a chore. You may not get all of the laundry done in one day, but if you get just one load washed and dried, well then, you've accomplished something! If you can learn to get just a little bit at a time done, while the baby is napping or playing, you will be able to get more accomplished with a great deal less stress.

Learning how to go with the flow with your daily schedule can take some adjusting but it can be done! Don’t set a concrete schedule. Instead, make your plans tentative. Obviously there are some things, such as doctor's appointments, that must be kept on time. However, many of the other tasks you perform can easily be switched around. Once you start to realize that life does not have to run on a die-hard schedule, you will more easily be able to enjoy your time with your baby and save yourself a great deal of stress.

The most important thing for new moms to remember is that the first year of motherhood will only happen once. The experiences that you have in the first year of motherhood will be memories that you will cherish forever. Learn to go with the flow so you can remember your first year of motherhood with happy memories and not as stress overload!

Baby Names Can Imply A Lot About The Baby

.

In Chinese metaphysical system, a well chosen baby name is so important that parents have to go to the experts - or gifted metaphysicans - and pay big bucks just to have them choose a powerful and auspicious baby name for their new born. It's commonly believed and accepted that a well chosen baby name is the best gift parents can present to their baby. With the right baby name, the new life journey will set off at the most positive and harmonious manner, which is what parents will demand for their offsprings.

Choosing an auspicious baby name has become so important in the Chinese culture that a baby name has to be carefully analysed and designed with detailed consideration given to the baby's natal chart. That would mean, in a western way of saying, that a baby name is to be designed in accordance with the baby's astrological chart analysis. It's that important. And there is no fooling around it because once determined, the baby name will stay with the person for life. It's therefore a very serious matter - of course if you deem it important to begin with.

It'd be whole lot better to use gut feeling when there is no system with which you can use to come up with the best baby name for your young one. Just visualize how your young one's future friends will react when they learn of this baby name you have in mind. Don't just follow some celebrity's name just because they look cute or cool in a certain movie or whatever. Be very serious and careful when you're trying to design the baby name because you sure don't want your young ones to be laughed at or made fun of all life long just because they carry a name tag that are not appropriate.

Since people perceive others by context, how their first name, initials, and last name combine together can mean very differently too sometimes. Regardless how good each part is supposed to mean, when taken in full context, baby names are better to avoid funny and silly sounding combination or else your children will thank you very much in a desperate and not too well meaning way in the future.

Name carries vibrations. If a baby name is to be chosen according to some family tradition in honor of a certain ancestor whose name carries some fond memories or whatsoever, then it'd be better to check out the family tree thoroughly because having the same names with another relative is not fun at all; besides, since names carry energy, a certain characteristic is bound to be influencing the personality for whom the baby name is chosen.

Don't go too much to the extreme either way. Too much creativity used when thinking of a baby name can backfire. Examples are extremely unique spellings. It will be way too hard for the kid to keep on spelling his or her name to people who only know the common spelling of such name. Making it too difficult might just make the kids feel bad about their names which is not fun at all.

Share the honorable task of designing the best baby name with your partner. It'd serve to enhance better communication and bondage for the couple as well, not to mention the fact that two minds working together will bring forth better result. The baby is the result of joined resources between the two of you; so should the task of finding the best baby name for your baby.

Just stay focused and steer clear of all the family members and relatives who fight their ways to present you with their versions of the best baby names. Be yourself and pay attention to all the key points presented herewith - you should be able to get the job done with flying colors. At last, you've managed to manifest the perfect baby name for your new born!

Toy safety and facts about Toys

.
Toy Safety:

Since an uninflated balloon or a piece of a broken balloon could present a choking or suffocation hazard, adults should inflate balloons and supervise their use with children under the age of eight. Over 2.6 billion toys are purchased each year and parents are naturally very concerned about the products they give their children.

Be certain that eyes, noses, buttons, ribbons and other decorations are securely fastened and cannot be pulled or bitten off. "Toy-caused" accidents, which occur due to a fault in the toy's design, material content, construction or performance, are infrequent. Not all toys are appropriate for all ages of children.

Teach children to store their toys properly in a place selected by you. Spot check toys regularly for minor damage and urge children to let you know when toys need repair.

Playing with toys and behaviour:

Sometimes children's play can appear overly aggressive, causing parents to worry that the child will grow up to believe aggressive behavior and fighting are acceptable. Children are getting older younger - that means they grow out of toys earlier. Toys and play in general are an important part of the process of learning about the world and growing up.

It has been noted by researchers that, "Children as young as 18 months display sex-stereotyped toy choices". If you disapprove of a particular toy, dont buy it. Be careful to explain your reason for refusing as a forbidden toy can even be more attractive! Certain toys, such as barbies and toy soldiers, are often perceived to be more acceptable for one gender then the other.

Toy general information and History:

Toy makers change and adapt their toys to meet the changing demands of children thereby gaining a larger share of the substantial market. There are many different types of puzzles, for example a maze is a type of tour puzzle. The earliest toys were made from materials found in nature, such as rocks, sticks, and clay.

Toy soldiers, perhaps a precursor to modern action figures, have been a popular toy for centuries. In Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, children played with dolls made of wax or terra cotta, sticks, bows and arrows, and yo-yos.

Modern Cloth Diapers

.

Although both cloth diapers and disposable diapers have their takers, the truth is that modern cloth diapers are as hygienic and as easy to use as disposable diapers. Many modern cloth diapers come equipped with state of the art man made materials such as microfiber toweling (for absorbency), a polyurethane laminate also known as PUL (for a waterproof layer), and soft “stay dry” materials such as microfleece and/or suedecloth. In addition, cloth diapers are far more cost effective when compared to disposable diapers. To better understand the variety of cloth diapers available and which diaper is right for your infant, it is important to understand the differences between a disposable diaper and a cloth diapers.

Disposable diapers are usually a composite of more than one manmade materials and are designed for single use, since the diapers are not designed for repeat use they are not made to ‘last’. Recent studies have also shown that the production of disposable diapers consumes more energy and disposable diapers have a greater environmental impact when compared to cloth diapers. A modern day disposable diaper is usually constructed using multiple layers of materials. Compared to disposable diapers, cloth diapers are a combination of natural fibers and manmade materials. Many cloth diapers are made using natural cotton fibers (including pesticide free-organic) and some inner linings of cloth diapers use a polyester ‘stay dry’ lining to provide greater comfort.

Cloth diapers usually have elastic waist bands that make them flexible and comfortable as compared to disposable diapers. A cloth diaper can also be adjusted to accommodate a baby’s growth. Contrary to popular belief, cloth diapers do not require any special washing care, once the solid matter has been washed away; hot water and detergent usually kill any bacteria. Line drying a cloth diaper takes care of any remaining bacteria (which are killed once they are exposed to the sun’s UV rays). "Pocket" or "stuffable" diapers which consist of a water-resistant outer shell sewn with an opening in the back (for insertion of absorbent material) are also becoming increasingly popular.

It is believed that a child goes through an average of 6800 diapers changes; this would make cloth diapers far more economical when compared to a disposable diaper. On an average a family spends nearly $80 per month on disposable diapers, the cost of buying cloth diapers and laundering them at home is nearly half. Disposable diapers take a considerably longer time to decompose when compared to cloth diapers. It is important to note that nearly 200,000 trees are felled to make disposable diapers for American babies alone. Washing away excreta and urine are also one of the simplest and environmentally friendly ways of treating wastes. Dumping treated wastewater is much more environmentally friendly than dumping diapers in a land fill.

Modern cloth diapers can also be used with a biodegradable, disposable flush lining. All a parent has to do is remove the flush lining and flush it down the toilet. In essence, disposable diapers are no longer more convenient to use when compared to cloth diapers.

Dealing with diaper rashes

Nearly 60% of all children experience diaper rashes during their first month. Recent studies have shown that disposable diapers are no less likely to cause diaper rashes when compared to cloth diapers. If your baby develops diaper rashes you should try changing diaper brands or use a diaper that is made from a different material. It is important to understand that a diaper alone is not responsible for diaper rashes, all diapers whether cloth or disposable should be change frequently. Disposable diapers use numerous chemicals and materials that can be harsh on a baby’s sensitive skin. Rashes with cloth diapers, is usually the result of improper washing and/or a detergent reaction. Overall, the best way to prevent rashes is to change diapers regularly and making sure the diaper is dry at all times.

Baby Nursery Ideas

Baby Nursery Theme Ideas

Having a baby is one of the most exciting times in your life, but it can also be one of the most stressful times. When you bring home that little bundle of joy, a lot of things are going to change. Not only is your budget and your lifestyle going to change, but your home is going to change, too. The first step to having this baby is to prepare a place for him or her to stay. Making a baby nursery is extremely important, but it can also be fun. The first place that your child lives should be a fun, nurturing space within your home.

As far as baby nurseries go, there are some logistical problems that go along with the basic planning. If you don’t find out what sex the baby is going to be, then you have no way of planning out a theme. In general, female baby nurseries are going to have an overall different theme than male baby nurseries. Therefore, you have to make a choice in regards to your baby nursery themes. Either you are going to find out the sex of the baby before it is born or you are going to have to put together a room that can be appropriate for either gender.

Unisex baby room ideas are pretty simple to come up with. They should include neutral colors and they should have things like stuffed animals that both a little boy or a little girl could come to enjoy. You shouldn’t be painting the room with any pink or blue tones, as these indicate a sex for the baby. Instead, you should be concentrating on painting the room a soft color like yellow, which could go either way if it had to.

If you do make the decision to find out the sex of your little one, then things get a little bit easier. From there, baby nursery ideas are easier to come up with. Little girl baby nurseries should have a strong emphasis on soft shades of pink. They should include dolls and other things that are associated with female children. This is your daughter’s living space for the first part of her life, so it should be well suited to help her grow up.

A little boy’s nursery room should be a little different. The traditionalists would say that it should be painted blue, but you have a little bit more leeway when working with little boys. Sports themes are a contemporary idea and can be fun. After all, most red blooded males grow up to have a love for sports. If sports aren’t your thing, then many folks like to go with jungle themed baby nurseries for boys. These things can make for wonderful nurseries if they are put together correctly.

Making the perfect baby room is all about making a decision and going with it. As long as you put some time into the room, it should be a great place for your new child to learn to grow. Glenn Dahlenburg

Top Nursery Safety Concerns

.

When a baby is on the way, new moms have a lot to think about – decorating the nursery, arranging finances, deciding whether they should stay at home or return to work, and the changes in their bodies from pregnancy. However, one of the most important aspects of being a new mom is creating a safe and secure nursery for your baby.

A lot of moms will find a good previously owned crib or hand-me-down, instead of buying a new one. Obviously, when shopping for previously owned cribs, keep safety at the top of the list.

• Make sure the crib is in good shape, and is relatively new (to avoid the potential for lead paint). You should avoid antique cribs.
• Measure the distance in-between the slats. The space shouldn’t be more than 2-3/8 inches. Also, make sure there aren’t any missing slats.
• Also, check the rail height. To measure this, lower the mattress to its lowest and then raise the rails. Then, measure from the very top of the side rails down to the bottom of the mattress, ensuring there is a minimum of 26 inches in-between the two.
• Even though cut-outs in the head and foot of the crib are attractive and very beautiful, do not purchase cribs that have them. A baby’s head could get trapped in the cut-outs.
• Inspect the four corner posts to make sure they are level with the end panels. The posts can be as much as 1/16th of an inch higher than the end panels, but no more. This will reduce the risk of your baby’s clothes catching causing a strangulation hazard.
• Does the crib contain all of the hardware? If any hardware is missing, don’t purchase this crib and chose another one.

Once you decide on a crib that is safe and in good condition, take note of this list of safety tips so your little one can sleep safely.

• Put the crib in the nursery far from any windows. Window curtain cords and blinds could become wrapped around your little one’s neck.
• Check the mattress. It should fit in the crib without any gaps. If there is a gap in-between the crib and mattress large enough for two of your fingers, it is not safe. Resist the temptation to stuff the gap with blankets. You should get a new crib or mattress.
• Do not use blankets, quilts or pillows in your baby’s crib.
• Never try to create your own mattress waterproofing by with garbage or dry-cleaning bags. It’s possible they might stick to your little one’s face, causing a breathing hazzard.
• Install a smoke detector in your little one’s nursery or in the hallway outside the nursery. Remember to change the batteries every six months.
• Finally, always place your little one to sleep on her back.

Pregnancy and Baby Boy Names

.
Whether it’s in the animal world or human, pregnancy is a very important time for any family. It is that special blessing that allows families to bond better, to express love and take care of each other. At a time like this, there’s: happiness on everyone’s face and that truly can’t be replicated by any other joy in the world. The experience of conceiving is entirely a woman’s domain and her happiness can spread joy to every family members face. This is a time when she needs to be cared for, well fed and treated more or less like a princess and yes we’re talking about pampering her as much as you can because she brings to us a gift that’s not possible from any other source. Pregnancy is an important time in the family and all family members need to ensure that the soon to be mother does not exhaust or strain herself right from the early days. So when it comes to little household chores, picking up things behind you or little errands in the neighborhood all family members need to do their bit.

When it comes to pregnancy, the little bump will not be evident or noticeable at its inception and neither are you going for a sonography on the very first day, but there’s tell tale signs of pregnancy. First and foremost most women become aware just as soon as they miss their period dates. You could let it go unnoticed if you were about a week late, but longer than that may just be the sign you were looking for and it’s time to talk to your doctor. Once you’re pregnant, your appetite will invariably increase. You will certainly be hungry before meal times or will feel the need to nibble away even when it’s not time to eat. This is not all; you’re also going to eat a little more despite having eaten all the tidbits. Here’s another sign. For women, you could always, press around your nipples with just a little extra force to observe if there is a watery white secretion from your nipples. This isn’t something you’d do ordinarily but if you’re feeling something within, this is a guaranteed sign. Another sign, which is usually noticed by family members, is mood swings. As a result of the phenomenal hormone changes within you there’s going to be noted changes in your demeanor. We don’t mean irrational but they’ll certainly be a little different from your usual character.

Of course after the initial hunches and predictions, there’ll be the medical tests, confirmations and precautions to be taken. Honestly, though a long period the excitement is too much for any family and time will certainly fly past, and sooner or later, it’s time for the delivery. When it comes to choosing a name for your little bundle of joy, different families do it their way. There are many who will simply check the internet for popular names, whereas others will name the child after someone who has played an important role in their lives.

When it comes to naming baby boys, there are many families where the child is named just as his father only he’ll have a junior added to it. For example Robert Downing will have a son called Robert Downing Jr. There are others who choose names inspired from events or places in their lives. For example a little boy could be called Roman if he was conceived on a Roman holiday. Other little boys can be named after popular sports persons. This includes David from David Beckham, Roger from Roger Federer or even Lance from Lance Armstrong. Your little boy could well be named after his grandfather or even an uncle. Little boys can also be named after leading actors and as such there’s a great many Toms, Brads and Bens. A little child’s name can also be created by taking a bit from the mothers and fathers names. For example, parents with the name Mike and Rachael could easily name their son Michael. The possibilities are many. For those who’re influenced by literature, your sons’ names could be popular characters from Shakespeare’s creations and there are others who select names from the holy book itself. So whether your name’s Hugh, Jude, Alex, Lucas, Neo, Milan, Ethan or anything else, it’s special because when you were a little boy, there was a lot of thought behind finding you the best name. Substituting Words In Baby Sign Language

.
Many parents have their own words that they prefer to use with their baby in certain situations such as meal times, breastfeeding, bedtime etc.

When using basic sign language to communicate with babies, where it is important to say the word at the same time as doing the sign, some parents will substitute the word that is associated with a particular sign for their own preferred word.

For example when approaching meal time the sign for "eat" may be used but the spoken word used in association with the sign may be substituted by the parent for their preferred word such as "din-dins"

The question arises as to whether or not this is good practice to substitute words which are not necessarily the correct correlating word with the sign.

When using a baby sign program such as Australian Baby Hands which uses Auslan, Australian Sign Language, the words associated with the sign are the correct ones for those signs.

Auslan is a language all of its own and by substituting words and relating them to a particular sign it is no longer proper Auslan.

But, we are talking about baby sign language here and as a busy parent it is important we remember that while trying to use Auslan we must also make this a fun and easy experience for you and your baby.

As with the example for the sign "eat" then substituting the word "din-dins" may be acceptable as the end result achieved will be that your baby understands that food is involved with this sign.

However substituting the word "hungry" while doing the sign for "eat" is not the same since there is quite a different sign for "hungry" than the sign for "eat".

There may be situations with signs and words where a substitution for the correct word with the sign is perfectly acceptable. One particular example is "breast feed", many mothers have their own word they prefer to use such as "num-nums".

Wherever possible try to use the correct word associated with the sign as this will help to advance your baby's speech development.

It is important to remember again that Auslan is a proper language.

By using incorrect, made up or modified signs you are changing the language of the Deaf Community. In some cases this has caused upset and even outrage among the Deaf Community such as a recent story in the press where a British children's TV presenter opened the show by signing "I'm happy to see you" incorrectly which was translated into a rude sentence containing swear words.

So how strict do we need to be?

Living in Australia I feel that it is important that we respect the language of our Deaf Community and try to use Auslan as best we can.

Baby sign language is a bridging gap for communication while your infant is preverbal so even if you are not planning on further study in Auslan than learning some simple signs for words that will help make you and your babies life easier such as "eat", "drink", milk, "more" should be easy enough to stick to using correct Auslan.

Even stringing together two to three word sentences as your baby grows such as "more drink please", can be simply done while sticking to the correct word and the correct sign.

It is unlikely that your baby will get signs 100% correct as their co-ordination levels take time to adapt to any new task at hand. This is ok. Praise your baby's attempts and re-enforce the sign back to them. Repetition is key to helping babies learn any new skill and baby sign language is no different. With praise and repetition as your baby's co-ordination skills improve so will their ability to communicate through sign.

To help develop language acquisition using the correct word and encouraging your baby's initial efforts can help advance their vocabulary. It is important to listen to your baby, praise them and then re-enforce the correct word by speaking back to them slowly and patiently. Speech patterns develop over time and using baby sign language while saying the spoken word helps develop synapses between the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

For more information on how to help develop your baby's speech you might like to read a little help on the road to talking.

Remember, it is not a test. Using baby sign language should be fun for you and you baby. By using Auslan we support and respect the language of the Deaf Community in Australia and hopefully we may help to bridge even more communication gaps around the country.

Happy Signing and as always, have fun! :-)

How To Setup The Perfect Baby Shower Decorations

.

Have that great looking background for your baby shower by setting up decorations at the party. Keep in mind the amount of money you set aside for the baby shower party. There are many great ways to setup the baby shower decorations. The party can be way more exciting if the host takes a little time and plans the variety of ways the baby shower decorations can be setup.

Baby shower decorations can be just as the host likes them. They can be plain or very complicated. The way the decorations are setup can make the mom-to-be feel very special. The way a baby shower can be decorated is practically endless.

Setting up baby shower decorations

The theme of the baby shower needs to be considered when setting up the decorations. The decorations will be dictated by the theme of the party if you want the party area to have a decor that flows with everything. An example would be having china and silver in a more traditional themed baby shower.

The current trend is for themes to be more modern and utilize popular characters from a cartoon. The theme is generated using the character chosen and all decorations follow. There are plenty of stores that sell a wide variety of decorations are all your needs.

Great decoration ideas

It is not necessary to spend and excessive amount on decorations. Being resourceful and thoughtful will allow decorations to be made that are most memorable. Using a little creativity when getting the party organized prevents the bank account from taking major damage.

When the place of the baby shower is being setup, it is a good idea to stay with straightforward baby shower decorations that will prevent everything from looking too flashy. Flowers of the season and some simple party toys make for a smooth gathering of friends and family.

If a more extensive party is wanted, then much more is needed than a few toys and flowers. The good news is that this stuff can be used again for other parties like a birthday party for a child. The host may decide to give the decorations to the mom-to-be as a memento.

Decorations on a budget

You can find balloons for very cheap and they are great at parties. Get balloons that are very colorful so they can be arranged as a center piece on the tables. To keep the balloons from getting away, use a plush toy or baby bottle at the end of the string.

There are many everyday items that are great for decorations. A great idea is to utilize a baby bath tub as a punch bowl. It can also be used to keep different gifts that are brought by guests. Decorating the tub with balloons and ribbons is a great way to match the theme.

Utilizing an umbrella can make a great decoration. Flip them upside down and hang them from the ceiling with colorful ribbons.

The simplest of items can be used for decorations. Be resourceful in creating great baby shower decorations that are inexpensive. Todd Lavergne

New Avenues For Preparing For Your Baby's Birth

.

With Birthright, an online birthing tutorial, you will learn new practices for preparing for your baby’s birth. Did you know that the average doctor can see up to 50 patients a day? Don’t depend solely on your OB to educate you in the intricacies of child birth. The creator of Birthright didn’t and as a result of educating herself Catherine delivered each of her two babies via natural child birth.

INTERVIEWER: Catherine, when and why did you decide to create Birthright?

Catherine: My inspiration for creating Birthright occurred over the course of several years but began as I fell pregnant with my first child. Being a university research assistant helped me to investigate pregnancy and childbirth voraciously, and the facts I found did not add up with the perceptions of childbirth I encountered from mothers and medical personnel. The more I studied, the more I realized how misinformed we are about birth.

I studied, read, and learned so much about natural birth that when my birthing began, I faced it without fear. I had my first child with no interventions in a total time of about 3 hours with no pain medication and no pain. Then, two years later, I had my second child, in 45 minutes again with no medications, no intervention and no pain. This time, I was even back into my pre-pregnancy jeans two days later.

INTERVIEWER: What did you learn about the standard medical deliveries here in the United States?

Catherine: Currently 1 in 5 women in the US has her labor induced and is never told that induction quadruples her risk of c-section nor of the risks it poses to the baby. In addition, c-section rates are over 30% when the World Health Organization standards estimate that only 10% of women may require surgical births.

I could no longer sit idly by allowing this misinformation about birth to continue. OBs are not taught the natural, normal process of birth, but are taught birth is something to be managed, to be mistrusted at each step. It is this active management which creates the complications so often seen today. In truth, the research supports that 93-95% of all births are completely uncomplicated. In addition, many of the most common procedures performed during birth are not evidence-based, meaning there is no evidence to support their routine use. The most common include episiotomy, pushing in lithothomy, electronic fetal monitoring, restrictions on food/drink, iv, amniotomy, and use of pitocin to name a few. All the above interventions have been shown to increase the risks of complications rather than the reverse.

INTERVIEWER: How is your tutorial laid out?

Catherine: The lessons are delivered via email in sequence from lesson 1-14. The course is cumulative, meaning that the lessons build upon each other. The lessons are as follows:

I. Dissecting Pain in Childbirth
II. How Perception Affects Childbirth
III. Breaking the Chain: Changing Your Perceptions About Childbirth
IV. Removing Barriers to Birthing
V. Intervention Analysis: Understanding Interventions in Birthing
VI. Interventions for the Baby
VII. Prevention & Management of Discomfort in Birthing
VIII. Birth Positions
IX. Natural Comfort Measures
X. Stages of Birthing & Management Strategies
XI. For the Birth Companion
XII. Signs of Birthing
XIII. Due Dates, Post Dates & Induction
XIV. Meconium Happens: Handling Complications in Birthing

INTERVIEWER: What's your definition of success once a student has completed your course?

Catherine: My definition of success is that students will become informed consumers who understand their birth choices, understand the risks/benefits to birth practices, and make their own informed consent in terms of their desires for their own birth. They will understand how their actions and perceptions are directly related to the birth experience they will have and how to employ natural methods to ensure a smoother, easier birth. They will view birth without fear and will have the necessary tools to enter their birthing mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared. They will also understand how to prevent common complications and be better equipped to deal with complications should they arise.

INTERVIEWER: In closing Catherine let me say that I can see just how comprehensive and inclusive your program is. In interviewing you I got a clear sense of your commitment and passion for the subject of natural child birth. It’s obvious to me and I think the readers that this is your calling in life and that you are indeed fulfilling it. Ava J. Land

Is my baby signing back? How to interpret those first signs

.

As a parent, your baby’s “first sign” is greeted with as much excitement as your baby’s “first word”. For some parents though, the excitement is short lived as parents wonder what their baby is trying to communicate to them through baby sign language.

There are three steps to interpreting your baby’s signs and these can be broken down as follows:

- Sign Introduction
- Your Baby’s Physical Capabilities
- Sign Generalisation

1. Sign Introduction

When parents introduce baby sign language into their home they generally start with a small number of signs that are a combination of both practical and motivational signs. To understand what your baby is trying to communicate, the first step is to recall what are the baby signs you have introduced into your home. By a process of elimination, see if you can match your baby’s attempt at signing with one of the baby signs that you are using consistently in your home. It is important to remember that the sign language that your baby has created may not 100% resemble the baby signs that you have been using. The reasons for this are highlighted in step 2 and 3.

2. Your Baby’s Physical Capabilities

Your baby’s physical capabilities and motor skills will depend on the age of your baby. When children begin to sign sometimes the sign will be created in reverse. The reason for this is that each time you sign to your baby, your baby actually sees the sign backwards. An example of this was with my neighbour’s child who I taught the baby sign for cat. When he finally signed back to me instead of rubbing his right hand in an upward motion on his left hand (toward his body), Luke was rubbing his right hand on the back of his left away from his body. If you were to look at me demonstrating the sign in a mirror it would look exactly like the way Luke had recreated it. This is something to consider when interpreting your baby’s signs, are they signing it backwards due to their perception of the way the sign was created.

It is also important to note that younger babies may have difficulty in crossing their arms (for signs such as koala bear) or may use all fingers for signs that only involve one finger (for signs such as Dad). For this reason it is important to notice the location of your baby’s hand when illustrating the sign and be aware of what is within your baby’s field of vision, these should provide some clue into what your baby is trying to communicate. This combined with a process of elimination should help identify what your baby’s attempt means.

3. Sign Generalisation

As with spoken language, baby’s who are exposed to baby sign language sometimes use one sign to symbolise many different objects or may use the sign in reference to just one item. An example of this was when Luke who knew the sign for cat, saw a dog in the park one day. His response to this was to sign the word for cat. Luke had identified the dog as a four-legged animal and had assumed that it belonged to the same group as a cat. When a baby begins to speak they may often use one word to represent many different objects. In the case of Luke, it was important to encourage his attempts but to also introduce the sign for dog and later to clarify the differentiation between a dog and cat through stories, friend’s pets and stuffed toys.

In summary, when the moment arrives and your baby begins to sign, please remember to greet your baby’s attempt with enthusiasm and encouragement. Through a process of elimination, you should be able to clarify what your baby is trying to communicate and help reduce frustration for you and your baby. And remember, have fun!

Happy Signing!

Baby sign language and its benefits to using it with toddlers

.

How many parents currently have a toddler going through the “terrible two’s” and wonder is there something out there that could help?

Baby sign language could be the answer you are looking for.

Many parents ask me “Is it too late to introduce baby sign language to my toddler?” and I always say definitely not.

A lot of the time parents of toddlers think that as their toddler is no longer a baby, that baby sign language is not an option for them as their child is too old.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Baby sign language has been found to benefit children of many different age groups.

When your child enters the toddler stage, they generally have quite a small vocabulary. The reason for this is that there are still some letters/words that they physically cannot get their tongue around. How many times have you seen your toddler trying to get their point across but they do not have all the words they need to do so?

Many of the “terrible two tantrums” are a result of when toddlers are unable to express themselves to their satisfaction.

Baby sign language when used with toddlers can help with these frustrating moments as they offer your toddler a mode of communication that allows them to be understood.

So how do you begin to introduce my toddler to baby sign language?
The first step is to incorporate 5 signs into your toddlers’ daily routines. These five signs usually revolve around eating, drinking, sleeping and playing.

Be sure when introducing signs to your toddler, that you are incorporating signs that will be both practically useful to you and your child but also signs that are motivational for your toddler. Practical signs include eat, drink or sleep. Motivational signs may include teddy bear, book or play.
It is important that when you say the word that you also sign the word. Consistency is the key. For more tips on how to incorporate baby sign language into your home, you can read my article on the 10 steps to signing success.

So what are the benefits of introducing baby sign language to your toddler? Dr Kimberlee Whaley conducted a study in November 1999 researching the use of ASL (American sign language) signs with babies and toddlers in the preschool environment. Dr Whaley said that "We've known for a long time that there is a lot of thought going on in young infants' heads, but they don't have the skills to use spoken language….however they do have the motor skills to use sign language." This study as well as the work of Dr Marilyn Daniels highlights the benefits of introducing sign language to older children.

The benefits of introducing sign language to toddlers include the following:

* Baby sign language helps to reduce frustration for toddlers and allows them to use signs where they are unable to express themselves verbally.

* Baby sign language supports different modes of learning by using both hearing and sight to teach your toddler. Some people learn best through hearing while others are more visual learners. Baby sign language involves you the parents saying the word followed by providing a visual of the word through sign language.

* Baby sign language provides an insight into what your toddler is interested in and their personality.

* Baby sign language provides your toddler with a strong foundation for language development and vocabulary building. With the help of baby sign language, your toddler can engage in two-way conversations with their family and care givers.

* Baby sign language can stimulate brain development in your toddler. Dr Daniels noted in her research how sign language uses both the left and right hemisphere of the brain in comparison to a spoken language that only uses the brain’s left hemisphere.

* Baby sign language can enhance your toddlers’ confidence and self-esteem, as they are now able to express themselves through baby sign language.

When your toddler begins to develop a larger vocabulary and can then get his tongue around all words, he or she will typically start to sign less and less frequently.
It is up to you if you wish to encourage your toddler to sign or if you only use baby sign language communication tool while your toddler is not fully verbal.

Start baby sign language with your toddler today and help reduce those frustrating moments for you both!

A Mums Buyers Guide To Child Bike Carriers

.

We bought over a period of a 1-2 months, trialled and discarded two popular ways of biking with our 1 yr old daughter before finding the answer - I intend this article will help you to avoid making the same mistakes we made.

Getting back onto a bike for both Mums & Dads after the arrival of a new child is a terrific low-impact way to grant your partner some "me time" whilst spending some quality time with your new child and it is a terrific low-impact way to enjoy the fresh air, get fit and travel further than you could on foot alone

When it comes to biking with baby there are really only a couple of choices - either a baby bicycle carrier or a trailer. Having used a trailer a couple of times we found it's clumsiness and size restricted our cycling to the widest of bike tracks, the distance of our child from us made us uneasy and also restricted interaction. We weren't happy with our child sitting at "exhaust height" - we soon settled on a child bicycle carrier - or a bicycle mounted child carrier - to give it it's serious name.

There are actually 3 types of carrier you can buy; The incredibly common rear-fixed seat, a front-fixed seat, usual in Europe, and, the newest, a center-fixed seat.

* Rear-Attached - Lots of generic brands - Topeak, Humax, etc etc. very common, mass produced in Asia. These seats really belong in the 20th century and it surprises me that mums & dads still buy them, other than they tend to be cheaper.

Interaction with your child doesn't exist, balance is out, carrying additional items in a rucksack etc is hard. Fitting a rear-fixed seat to a bicycle with disc-brakes can be impossible at worst and time-consuming and expensive at best and fitting a rear-fixed carrier to a bicycle with dual-suspension is usually impossible.

The only upside, other than cost, that a rear-fixed carrier may have is that it can carry a heavier kid, up to 22Kilos or more. Although since this is the approximate weight of a six year old, you have to ask why they're not riding their own bicycle by this time!

* Front-Mounted - Such manufacturers as BoBike, iBert and others, these usually attach by a single point to front of the bicycle. Front-fixed bicycle seats puts your child in front of you, encouraging interaction, engaing your child in the ride, reducing distractions to the rider, however having all the weight attached at the front-wheel also makes steering harder and generally restricts maximum weight carryable to 15 kilos (~3 years old).

* Center-Mounted - Only one brands known to exist - WeeRide. This attaches in two points - at the handlebars and also at the seat post, bettering the pure front-fixed offering by spreading the weight more evenly, whilst still having all the advantages of a front fixed carrier. This type of carrier will also attach to a disc-brake or dual-suspension bicycle.

We discarded the trailer after trying it and we bought a traditional rear-mounted child bike carrier for our 1 yr old child not so long ago. After riding with it once on our bikes, my partner told me she'd never pedal with our daughter again in a rear mounted seat. Our daughters nose was running, she'd kicked off her shoes and unzipped her jacket - and all this out-of-sight behind us.

On top of these "care" concerns are the obvious practicalities of balance and ease of use. With a child behind you, your balance is off, out-of-sight you're unable to react to any sudden movement. Your child will be more restless unable to see where they are going, throwing their weight about to see around you. It's probably more dangerous - since you're concentrating on whats going on behind you - rather than watching where you're going.....

Lastly - ever considered getting off a bike with a rear-mounted carrier - chances are you'll kick your child in the face as you try to lift your leg over . And worst of all - in an accident - you can't protect them, can't put your arms around them!

So we threw it away and bought a center mounted WeeRide child bicycle carrier - all of these problems are solved. Our infant can see where she’s going, we can keep an eye on her, our balance is better, we can get off simply and best of all - there's the added advantages... we'll count doggies, sing songs, guess colours, play I-Spy, we're interacting, all things we couldn't do in a rear-mounted carrier.

So please before you buy a rear-fixed carrier - consider long and hard about whether all you want to do is transport your child from A-B with all the issues above - or do you want to enjoy riding with your toddler and interact, participate. Mike Clarkson
